Dark DME

Description

Dark dried malt extract (DME). This dry powder is extracted from worts made using a blend of malts such as pale malt, munich malt, crystal malt, and black patent malt. This is similar to amber DME with the addition of black patent. Owing to contributions from the munich and crystal malts, dark DME will produce beers with some rich maltiness, residual sweetness, mouthfeel, and body. It could be used in conjuntion other extracts to produce a dark colored exctract only brew. In general, the exact composition of malts used to make a given dark DME will not be indicated and differnet brands might vary substaintially.

Beer Styles

Dark DME can be used to achieve dark color in extract only recipes. It could be used for brown ales, porters, and stouts. Used as 100 percent of the fermentables it will produce beers that are copper to dark brown, so darker beers will require steeping some black patent, black barley, or chocolate malt.
