Dark LME
Description
Dark liquid malt extract (LME) that imparts dark roasted grain character and color. Used alone it will tend to produce beers that are medium brown to dark brown. It can be mixed with other extracts to make lighter colored results. It is generally made from a blend of pale malt, munich malt, crystal malt, and black malt. This is similar to the composition of grains used to make dark DME. The exact proportions of each grain is usually not advertised and probably varies a little between producers.
Beer Styles
Works for most dark beer styles. Dark LME alone could make a passable brown porter. Although, it might be lacking in chocolate malt character. Similarly, robust porter formulations would benefit from steeping some black malt, chocolate malt, and possibly some crystal malts or black barley. Assuming that most dark LME is not made using black barley, stouts could be made using dark LME with some steeped black barley.
