Styrian Goldings

Alpha-Acid (%)

3.0 - 5.5

Description

This is a hop closely realated to Fuggles grown in Central Europe. Contrary to their name, they are not derived from any of the Golding varieties. Styrian Goldings are also known as Savinja Goldings. The variety was developed in the Austrian state of Styria in the 1930's as a replacement for less hardy German aroma varieties. A variety grown in Yugoslavia at the time was propagated to Styria via conal selection. They have low alpha-acid content and desirable aroma characteristics. Similar to Fuggles, they are prized for their earthy and slightly spicy aroma. They are often used for late hop additions in British and Belgian ales.
