Glucose

Description

Glucose is also called corn sugar or grape sugar. It is sometimes called dextrose, but this naming is depricated. This monosaccharide is easily metabolized by animals, plants, and yeast. Blood glucose levels are what is meant by the term blood sugar. Glucose forms the basic unit of starch for energy storage in plants and the basic unit of glycogen for energy storage in animals. Most comercially available refined glucose in the US is produced from corn starch. Among home brewers, corn sugar is a favorite priming sugar for bottle carbonation. It can also be added to the boil like other refined sugars to reduced the precieved body and mouthfeel.
